  2. @Miri I think Beatty's definition of peace is where no one is arguing with each other because they are all too busy watching tv or looking at some other screen and they don't have time nor interest in voicing their opinion, probably because they don't have one because they can't think for themselves.

  3. @Morgan H I think since tv shows and movies are getting really violent in the 451 society, Mildred doesn't mind if she kills animals. I think you are right and the screens do have a lot to do with it because these people aren't like humans anymore, they are mindless, thinkless robots who kill for the thrill just like Montag loves burning things.

  4. @Sofia I think this society burns books because they simply don't like them and have no use for them and if you have no use for something, you get rid of it. It wasn't the gov't who dispelled the books from people's lives, it was the people themselves who didn't care for them anymore. What with their screens and all, what need have they of books? They don't learn anything from them, they have no need to learn things because all they do is watch tv all day.

  5. @Kendall I think that Beatty is telling Montag this so he can find out the truth about who Montag really is and what his interests and fears are. Beatty definitely suspects something is not right with Montag and his interest in books. I don't think other firemen ever get curious and Beatty is poking at Montag, digging to see what he can find out about Montag's secrets.

  6. @Lily-Claire I think Montag will be troubled by it but he won't leave it alone because he is a curious person, that's why he stole the books in the first place. I believe that Montag will try and find out the truth about his corrupt society and about the past that was twisted by the gov't. Montag wants to know why all this is happening and what happened in the past. Now that Clarisse is dead, Montag has no way to do that except by his own findings.

  7. @AnnaMarie I think Montag tries to convince himself that he is happy and after he ponders his fake happiness for a while, I think he isn't surprised to realize that he isn't happy after all, that his happiness was a result of his faking it. He really thought about Clarisse's question after she asked him and he finally came to terms with it but what is he going to do to make himself happy instead of wallowing in self-pity because he wants to be happy, he just doesn't know how to achieve happiness for himself that isn't based on someone else's perception of him.

  8. @Ella I think they put up with each other because they have to, because without Montag, Millie would lose her tv family and without Millie, Montag would lose his sanity and compassion because he cares for Millie in a deep sense, he doesn't love her but she doesn't even care for him and I think that is the root of their issues as a couple and that's why Montag has a hard time coming to terms with his life and his job and that's why Millie doesn't care about Montag's feelings or even notice when he's not himself.
